Honoring retired Army Sgt. Joey Banegas as Grand Marshal

Reviewed by Valencia Perez / LasCruceslocal.org

Retired Army Sgt. Joey Banegas from Hatch, New Mexico has been named as the Grand Marshal of the Electric Light Parade in Las Cruces. Banegas enlisted in the U.S. Army at 17 years old in July 1999 and served as an infantryman and 50-caliber anti-tank gunner in Afghanistan.

On October 10, 2004, Banegas was part of a convoy transporting ballot boxes from the Afghanistan presidential election when Taliban fighters ambushed them, hitting his vehicle with a rocket-propelled grenade. Banegas rescued his injured lieutenant and all 10 soldiers survived the attack.

After a separate incident where an improvised explosive device caused severe injuries to his right leg, Banegas had to have the leg amputated, leading to his medical retirement after six years of service. He now resides in San Antonio, Texas with his family and has pursued boxing and earned an advanced scuba diving certification.

The City of Las Cruces honors and thanks Sgt. Joey Banegas for his service and bravery.
