Reviewed by Katherine Murphy / claylocal.org
The Clay Fire Department is honoring Firefighter Lou Szitar as the "Firefighter of the Year" for his exceptional service in 2023. As the most senior active firefighter, Szitar consistently ranks among the top ten responders to emergency calls. His extensive knowledge, willingness to train new drivers, and positive attitude have been crucial in developing the next generation of emergency vehicle operators.
Throughout the year, Szitar chaired or assisted in nearly every social event hosted by the Department. He played a key role in organizing the "Santa Detail" event, where Town resident children get the chance to meet and greet Santa. Szitar's participation and guidance have made this event a beloved tradition.
Additionally, Szitar developed and coordinated the "Believe 31" blood drive and chili cook-off in memory of Past Chief Ken Stach. This event has provided significant assistance to numerous families in medical and financial need.
Szitar's dedication to the Clay Fire Department and the Town of Clay residents has been remarkable for over 45 years. His reliability, constant devotion to duty, and steadfast effort embody the spirit of a volunteer firefighter. Szitar's contributions have been essential to the success of various department events and initiatives. Congratulations to Firefighter Lou Szitar on a well-deserved award!
