Chalk the Walk Initiative Promotes Suicide Prevention Awareness
Staff Report / syracuselocal.org
County Executive Ryan McMahon has invited residents of Onondaga County to take part in the "Chalk the Walk" initiative, which will run from Monday, September 23rd to Friday, September 27th. This event aims to raise awareness for Suicide Prevention Month by encouraging participants to create positive and uplifting messages on sidewalks using chalk.
The initiative is supported by the Onondaga County Suicide Prevention Coalition (OCSPC) and Contact Community Services, Inc. More than 150 satellite sites will be involved, including school districts, colleges, non-profit organizations, and other community groups throughout the county.
The kickoff event featured youth artists from Syracuse University, Le Moyne College, East Syracuse Minoa High School, and the Syracuse City School District. Community members and staff from Onondaga County, as well as representatives from partnering organizations like the Everson Museum of Art, also participated. Speakers at the event included Antara Mitra, Executive Director of Contact Community Services, Inc.; Pamela Odom, Deputy Superintendent of Syracuse City School District; and Mark Vinciquerra, OCSPC Coordinator.
Residents and organizations wishing to contribute to "Chalk the Walk" can pick up chalk supplies at Contact Community Services. For those in need of support, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline can be reached by dialing 988.
