Meet Mrs. McGhee: Committed Speech Therapist and Cheer Coach

Staff Report / sarasotalocal.org

Mrs. McGhee, the Speech Therapist at Taylor Ranch Elementary in Venice, Florida, is spotlighted as part of Sarasota County Schools' Teacher Tuesday initiative. She is currently in her 11th year of teaching and has spent 24 years as a Speech-Language Pathologist.

Originally hailing from Alaska and raised in southern Ohio, Mrs. McGhee earned her master's degree in Communication Disorders from Marshall University. After living in West Virginia for many years, she relocated to Venice with her husband and three children nine years ago.

Mrs. McGhee discovered her passion for education at the age of 18 while taking a Communication Disorders class. Following 15 years in long-term care, she transitioned to working in schools, where she found a rewarding experience in helping students enhance their communication skills.

She emphasizes her dedication to her students, stating that she cares for each child as if they were her own and feels a sense of pride in their progress, whether it involves articulation or grammar.

In addition to her role as a Speech Therapist, Mrs. McGhee has a connection to cheerleading. She was a high school cheerleader and now coaches a team of 40 girls at Taylor Ranch Elementary, focusing on school spirit and leadership development.

Her guiding principle in education is, "You can be 100% right and 100% ineffective," which serves as a reminder for her to seek effective approaches in her work.
