North Port Faces Record Rainfall, Urgent Precautions Needed

Staff Report / NPlocal.org

The Sarasota-Bradenton area in Florida, particularly North Port, has experienced significant rainfall accumulation since the beginning of 2024. As of now, nearly 20 inches more rain has fallen compared to average years. According to the National Weather Service data, which began logging North Port-specific rainfall in February 2023, the area recorded 49.02 inches of rain from February to December 2023. In just the first nine months of 2024, the rainfall has reached 57.65 inches.

The region's highest recorded rainfall remains at 62 inches, noted in 1922. As the rainy season draws to a close, more precipitation is forecasted for the end of the weekend and early next week. Due to the heavy rains this season, the ground is currently saturated, and water is still present in swales, which may lead to ponding on roadways.

Residents are advised not to drive through water on the roads, even if it appears passable. The Department of Public Works is actively engaged in maintaining the stormwater drainage system and is using water control structures to manage water flow throughout the city.

Additionally, the city is offering sandbags for residents at the sandbag station located behind the George Mullen Activity Center at 1602 Kramer Way. More information about North Port's stormwater system can be found at NorthPortFL.gov/Stormwater. For live updates, residents can also check the USGS gauges.
