**September is Suicide Awareness and Prevention Month in San Francisco**
In recognition of Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month, the San Francisco Fire Department (SFFD) is promoting mental health awareness for first responders throughout September. The campaign, known as #MindfulMonday, emphasizes education and resources to reduce the risk of suicide within the community.
The SFFD encourages individuals to support those who may be struggling with mental health challenges by initiating conversations and expressing concern. Some suggested methods include:
- Noticing and mentioning any changes in behavior
- Showing empathy towards their feelings
- Proposing in-person connections
- Creating a sense of belonging
- Directly asking if they are having thoughts of suicide
The SFFD highlights the importance of bridging the gap in mental health care and encouraging friends and loved ones to seek professional help.
For those in need of immediate assistance, help is available by calling, texting, or chatting 988, where trained crisis counselors provide support 24/7. More information on supporting someone in crisis can be found at nami.org.
SFFD members and their families have access to various department resources:
- Behavioral Health Unit On-Call Mainline: (415) 940-5820, available 24/7
- ComPysch Employee Assistance Program: (833) 541-2341, available 24/7
- Office of Employee Health: (415) 558-3446
- SFHSS: (628) 652-4600 or visit sfhss.org/were-here-for-you
This initiative is aimed at fostering a supportive community and prioritizing mental health awareness among first responders and their families.
